The acting is powerful and the story is strong, even if it is a bit of a rehash of the Ben-Hur story—without the redemptive ending. Still, I left the theater feeling vaguely ill-at-ease, and it took me several hours to figure out why. I then realized that the degeneracy shown on screen—Emperor Commodus happily clapping his hands as a gladiator is decapitated, the crowd roaring its bloodlust—is too close to some forms of entertainment today, particularly professional wrestling. The gladiators of Rome took on certain contrived personalities, and gladiatorial combat was intended to tell some sort of story, just like today’s equivalent of gladiatorial entertainment. And as the crowd’s appetite was whetted by increasingly bizarre and violent combat, so too are today’s wrestling maniacs. Gladiator serves as an object lesson as to what can happen to a society that proceeds down such a violent path. The extreme violence used to create that lesson, however, prohibits children and teens (and will dissuade many adults) from getting a chance to experience it. Gladiator Movie Review Great Story! Great Writing! Great Acting! Great Directing! Great Score! This movie has it all. I especially enjoyed the mood of the film. Even though it has a lot of action, there is a subtle elegance throughout the picture that gives it great style. The movie flows effortlessly from scene to scene, while at the same time creating wonderful intensity and nail-biting excitement. The acting in the movie more than lives up to expectations. Russell Crowe is brilliant in his role as Maximus, the "general who became a slave, who became a gladiator, who defied an emperor. " Crowe"s intense style is perfect for the relentless determination and confidence of Maximus. Joaquin Phoenix is equally wonderful in his role as Commodus, the corrupt emperor. He plays a great villain because he is able to give Commodus depth by showing certain vulnerable or fragile sides, while at the same time instantly transforming to let the ruthless nature of his volatile character shine. It also helps that Joaquin has the classic Caesar look that works perfectly with his role. Connie Nielsen is also very good as Lucilla. However, perhaps the two finest performances in the movie were given by a couple of acting veterans in supporting roles. Richard Harris and Oliver Reed were exceptional in what will be remembered as crowning achievements at the end of their careers. Harris was perfect as Marcus Aurelius, the aging Caesar who reflects upon his life and contemplates how the world will remember him. And Reed, especially, gave my personal favorite performance in the movie as Proximo, the trainer for the gladiators. The way he spoke about the life of a gladiator, the splendor of Rome, and the "thrill of the Coliseum" really added excitement and anticipation during the viewing of the movie. Gladiator is filled with many memorable moments that one would need to see more than once to fully appreciate. The excitement felt for me when Rome is first shown in all its wonder and marvel is my favorite scene. But the whole movie is a rush! Hans Zimmer provides the absolute perfect score to capture the different moods in the movie. Ridley Scott sets the perfect tone with his artistic and creative directing. I would recommend it to anyone who can stomach intensity and enjoy an epic story for the ages. Next to Braveheart, this movie is the greatest of all-time! ·.

Best movie and excelent actors. Imagine a King who fights his own battles. Wouldn"t that be a sight? Brad Pitt really fit into this role in the movie like a fish to water.

The way Gladiator is stabbed at first is painful to see. The emperator was such a coward.

This movie, I think is the best movie I ever seen in my life. Russell Crowe as Maximus was the best. I"m hoping that Gladiator will win best picture in the Oscar this year. I also hope that Russell Crowe will win Best actor this year. By the way Insider was also the best.

Lol, The Troy movie should have been named Achillies. :p I read the Trojan War when I was a kid, and I do remember that Achillies wasn"t even one of the main characters in the book. Okay, maybe that was a little too far for me to say, but I do know that there were a LOT of main characters in this classic novel and the book wasn"t just centered on Achillies. And He died like in the middle of the book, anyway. He wasn"t even there when Odysseus came up with the idea of the Trojan Horse. He was long dead before that time. Anyway, I was upset after I walked out of the theater after seeing Achillies. They need to do another remake but THIS TIME base it on the book. HBO came out with a Trojan War show. I wonder if it is any good.

I wasn"t going to see this movie, the ad campaign just didn"t draw me in. About a week after it"s debut, my friend treated me to this movie and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. It had a great story and the action in this movie was just perfect. I remember just being filled with great excitement whenever a Gladiator fight broke out. I really liked Russell Crowe in this film, an actor I didn"t even know existed until this movie was released. I like how they make the bad guy Comodus so maniacally insane in some aspects that you kind of pity him, yet you know he is nothing but a brat and needs his just due. I recommend Gladiator.
